The Weekly Green: Tip 1

I'm going to start a new weekly post, called The Weekly Green, where I will give you a simple, everyday tip for "going green", saving energy, reducing toxins and chemicals in our lives, going back to basics, self-sufficiency and more! Maybe they are tips you already have heard - if so, maybe it can be a friendly reminder for you if you've been slacking off... and if not, maybe it can help you remember to share the tip with others who may not know!
Tip #1 - Unplug electronics and chargers when not in use. You may not know that even leaving the charger for your cell phone plugged in is sucking energy, even while you are not actually charging the phone! Same goes for other items around your house that may be sucking energy even while not in use: coffee makers with digital clock, electronics such as a DVD player, computers and more! Basically, if you don't depend on it being plugged in, unplug it until you need to use it! Power strips make it easy to unplug multiple items at once. Not only is this an action towards being green, it is also a way to save green (on your electricity bill), and it reduces fire hazard!

Stay tuned next week for Tip #2!

Thanks for posting about this. I've read that the power sucked up by an appliance left plugged in can, in just one year, equal the amount of electricity the appliance uses while in use.
